Egg, red meat, and poultry intake and risk of lethal prostate cancer in prostate-specific antigen-era: incidence and survival.

High intake of eggs, poultry, and red meat may increase the spread of cancerous cells in prostate cancer patients and the chances of developing the disease in healthy men.

This study investigated the role of eggs, poultry, and red meat in the development and progression of lethal prostate cancer. Using data obtained from Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and case-only survival analysis, researchers examined the diets of more than 30,000 healthy men and prostate cancer patients.

Researchers observed that the risk of developing prostate cancer is 81% higher in men who consumed 2.5 or more eggs per week than in those who consumed less 0.5 eggs every week. In addition, high intake of poultry and red meat increased the risk of disease progression from the localized to the advanced stage in patients. These results show that high consumption of eggs, red meat, and poultry is strongly associated with the development of prostate cancer in healthy men and disease progression in patients.
