Cruciferous vegetables and cancer risk in a network of case–control studies.

​Adequate consumption of cruciferous vegetables may help guard against the development of kidney, pharyngeal, oral, esophageal, and colorectal cancers.

This study explored the relationship between the intake of cruciferous vegetables and the odds of developing cancer. Researchers systematically reviewed case-control studies that examined over 10,000 cases of cancer and 11,000 subjects.

The investigators found out that frequent consumption of cruciferous vegetables decreased the likelihood of developing oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, colorectal, and kidney cancers. On the other hand, no significant protective association was found between high dietary ingestion of cruciferous vegetables and prostate, laryngeal, ovarian, endometrial, stomach, and liver cancer risk in this study. The authors concluded that cruciferous vegetable may be beneficial in the prevention of several types of cancer.
