Red meat consumption and metabolic syndrome in the Costa Rica Heart Study.

Fondness for red meat can trigger the onset of metabolic syndrome.

This study examined pre-illness intake of red meat in relation to the subsequent development of metabolic syndrome. Researchers monitored the diets and incidence rates of metabolic syndrome among 2,058 adult men and women who enrolled in the Costa Rican Heart Study.

Researchers discovered that participants who reported higher  consumption of red meat demonstrated significant increase in the risk of metabolic syndrome. The data from this study indicate that habitual ingestion of red meat might be a risk factor for metabolic syndrome.
