Vegetarian Diets and Chronic Kidney Disease.

Plant foods may have a positive impact in the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This study examined the association between vegetarian diets and the occurrence and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Researchers reviewed data and evidence drawn out from eligible studies.

Researchers noted that plant foods had beneficial effects in inhibiting the development and slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease. The observed protective effects of vegetarian diets on chronic kidney disease was attributed to components of plant foods that boost the body's defense against hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome—the main causes of chronic kidney disease in western populations. The authors recommended the addition of plant foods as part of a dietary approach for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease.
