Dietary Sugar Intake Associated with a Higher Risk of Dementia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Older adults fond of consuming sugar from refined carbohydrates may be highly prone to suffer from dementia.

This study ascertained the link between frequent intake of sugars from sweetened beverages, candies, and desserts and the risk of dementia in older adults. A total of 138 out of the 789 participants in the study eventually developed dementia over a period of 8 years.

Researchers noted that participants who consumed the highest amounts of sugar from refined carbohydrates were two times more likely to receive a diagnosis of dementia than their colleagues who refrained from these types of foods. This study suggests that avid consumption sugar from refined carbohydrates may increase the incidence of dementia in older adults.
