Alcohol consumption and risk of pancreatic cancer in the Netherlands cohort study.
Heavy drinking of alcohol may put an individual at high risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
This study analyzed the relationship between the intake of alcohol and the odds of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Researchers surveyed more than 120,000 Dutch men and women for an average period of 13.3 years. During the course of the study, a total of 350 participants were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Researchers found a high rate of pancreatic cancer among individuals who consumed 30 g or more of alcohol per day. This 2009 study of Dutch men and women demonstrated that heavy consumption of alcohol may stimulate the formation and growth of cancerous cells and tumors in the pancreas.
