Soft drink and juice consumption and risk of physician-diagnosed incident type 2 diabetes: the Singapore Chinese Health Study.

Regular consumers of sugary juice and soft drinks may have a high tendency of developing type 2 diabetes.

​This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of consistent consumption of soft drinks and sugary juice on type 2 diabetes risk. Researchers analyzed nutritional and clinical data of 43,580 Chinese Singaporeans between the ages of 45-74 years and without any previous history of diabetes mellitus and other chronic diseases. They found a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes among subjects who regularly consumed soft drinks and sugary juice than in those who rarely or totally avoid these types of beverages. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that generous intake of sugary juice and soft drinks is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
