Cigarette smoking exposure and heart failure risk in older adults: the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study

Cigarette smoking may foster the development of heart failure.

This research work was carried out to ascertain the detrimental effects of cigarette smoking on heart failure risk. Researchers studied the smoking habits and estimated the risk of heart failure occurring in 2,125 men and women over a 9-year period.

Researchers observed a surge in the incidence of heart failure among past and present smokers. The results of this study support the view that cigarette smoking may be a major contributor to the development of heart failure.
