Alcohol consumption and the risk of new-onset uterine leiomyomas: a nationwide population-based study in 2.5 million Korean women aged 20 to 39 years

Fondness for alcohol may trigger the onset of uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) in women of reproductive age.

This study seeks to clarify the connection between alcohol drinking and a woman's propensity to develop uterine leiomyomas (fibroids). Researchers tracked the alcohol consumption habits and incidence of uterine fibroids among 2,512,384 Korean women aged 20-39 years over a 4-year period.

A woman's likelihood of having uterine leiomyomas was found to increase by as much as 12-20% with regular intake of alcohol. This study concluded that "avoiding or discontinuing drinking could lower the risk of new-onset uterine leiomyomas in early reproductive-age women."
