Association between added sugars and kidney stones in U.S. adults: data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018

Increased intake of diets loaded with added sugars may fuel the development of kidney stones in men and women.

This study examined whether an association exists between high dietary ingestion of added sugars and the formation of kidney stones. Researchers compared the prevalence rates of kidney stones between consumers and non-consumers of added sugars from difference sources in a study group comprising of over 28,000 men and women.

Researchers observed a high proportion of kidney stones occurred among participants on diets heavy on refined sugars. The results of this study showed that generous consumption of added sugars may promote the development of kidney stones.
