Maté consumption and the risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer in uruguay.

Frequent drinkers of mate tea may be at risk of having esophageal cancer.

​This study focused on the relationship between fondness for mate beverage and the propensity of developing esophageal cancer. Researchers compared mate drinking habits with the incidence of esophageal cancer in a study population comprising of more than 800 men and women from Uruguay. 

Researchers observed that the frequency of occurrence of esophageal cancer was high among lovers of mate beverage. This study highlights that larger intake of mate may contribute positively to the development of esophageal cancer.
