Consumption of ultra-processed foods and risk of multimorbidity of cancer and cardiometabolic diseases: a multinational cohort study

The probability of acquiring cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease may increase with the consumption of ultra-processed foods.

This study explored the link between the intake of ultra-processed foods and the likelihood of developing cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Researchers surveyed the dietary habits and health of 266,666 European men and women over an 11-year period. A total of 4,461 participants were diagnosed with cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease during the course of the study.

Researchers found out that individuals at the top of the ultra-processed food consumption ladder faced heightened risk of developing cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This 2023 study of European men and women documented that habitual ingestion of ultra-processed foods may be one of the factors that contribute to the development of cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
