Cumulative intake of artificially sweetened and sugar-sweetened beverages and risk of incident type 2 diabetes in young adults: the Coronary Artery Risk Development In Young Adults (CARDIA) Study

Heightened consumption of sweetened beverages may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes in young adults.

This study aimed to investigate the correlation between fondness for artificial and sugar-sweetened beverages and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in young individuals. Researchers collated information on the dietary habits and type 2 diabetes diagnosis status of nearly 5,000 men and women within the age bracket of 18-30 years for a period of 30 years.

Researchers observed that the greater the amount of sugary beverages consumed by participants, the higher their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Based on the data from this study, lovers of sweetened beverages may be prone to suffering from type 2 diabetes.
