Pregnancy dietary cholesterol intake, major dietary cholesterol sources, and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: A prospective cohort study

Avid intake of foods high in cholesterol, such as eggs, may facilitate the onset of gestational diabetes in pregnant women.

This study looked at the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on the level of dietary exposure to cholesterol during pregnancy. The study population included 2,124 pregnant women who completed validated food frequency questionnaires and underwent oral glucose tolerance test on a regular basis.

Researchers found a spike in the incidence of gestational diabetes among pregnant women on diets rich in cholesterol-containing foods, such as eggs. This study concluded that "higher dietary cholesterol from eggs intake during pregnancy was associated with greater risk of GDM."
