Prepregnancy plant-based diets and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: a prospective cohort study of 14,926 women

Imbibing the habit of consuming a healthy plant-based diet before pregnancy may curb the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women.

This study looked at the frequency of consumption of healthy plant foods before pregnancy in women in relation to the future development of gestation diabetes mellitus (GDM). Researchers examined 14,926 women with regards to their dietary habits and the occurrence of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Researchers discovered that greater adherence to a healthy plant-based diet correlated with decreased incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus. The data from this study suggested that eating healthy plant foods prior to pregnancy may help combat gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women.
