Legume consumption and CVD risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Habitual consumption of legumes may offer individuals adequate protection against cardiovascular disorders and coronary heart disease.

This meta-analysis investigated the role of dietary intake of legumes in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Researchers analyzed nutritional and clinical data extracted from 14 studies that examined the link between legume consumption and cardiovascular and coronary heart disease risk.

Researchers found a protective association between high intake of legumes and cardiovascular and coronary heart disease. Increase in the frequency of consumption of legumes was found to decrease both cardiovascular and coronary heart disease risk by 10%. The authors concluded that legumes are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk.
