Association of ultra-processed food intake with risk of inflammatory bowel disease: prospective cohort study

Generous consumption of ultra-processed foods may increase an individual's predisposition to inflammatory bowel disease.

This study investigated whether there is a link between the ingestion of ultra-processed foods and the probability of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Researchers used dietary information of more than 110,000 adults whose health were followed for nearly 10 years.

Researchers noticed that participants who ate the highest amount of ultra-processed foods had the greatest risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease. Evidence from this study suggest that frequent consumption of ultra-processed foods may contribute to the development of inflammatory bowel disease.
