Associations between fatty acid intake and diabetic retinopathy in a Japanese population

The odds of suffering from retinopathy may be stacked against diabetic patients who enjoy consuming fatty foods.

This study analyzed the consumption of fatty foods in relation to the development of diabetic retinopathy. Researchers assessed the data of 647 diabetic patients aged 40-74 years who underwent regular eye screening and responded to questionnaires about their diets.

Researchers found out that participants on high fat diets constitute a large proportion of the study population that had diabetic retinopathy. This study concluded that frequent ingestion of fatty foods may result in a spike in the incidence of retinopathy among diabetic patients.
