Free fatty acids are associated with insulin resistance and lipid accumulation in skeletal muscles.

This study evaluated the association of free fatty acids with insulin resistance in skeletal muscles. Researchers examined data and evidence obtained from several studies involving human subjects with obesity and type 2 diabetes and genetic and dietary obese animal models.

Researchers found out that free fatty acid promoted obesity, lipid accumulation and insulin resistance in skeletal muscles. Lipid metabolites, such as ceramides, diacylglycerol, and long chain fatty acid coenzyme As, mediated the effects of free fatty acids on skeletal muscles. The results of this study show that free fatty acids contribute positively to obesity, as well as insulin resistance in skeletal muscles.
