Association of Higher Intake of Plant-Based Foods and Protein With Slower Kidney Function Decline in Women With HIV

Diets that favor the consumption of plant foods may thwart the rapid deterioration of kidney function in HIV positive women.

This study evaluated the impact of consuming plant-based diets on kidney function in women with HIV. Researchers studied the dietary choices and assessed kidney function by regularly measuring the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 1,608 women living with HIV.

Researchers found out that strict adherence to a plant-based diet slowed down the decline of kidney function in women infected with HIV. This study recommends that plant foods should be an integral component of the diets of women living with HIV.
