Smoking and Risk of Microscopic Colitis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Cigarette smoking may trigger the development of microscopic colitis in men and women.

Microscopic colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the large intestine resulting in abdominal cramps and persistent watery diarrhea. This study clarified whether cigarette smoking can set an individual on the path to developing microscopic colitis. Researchers examined lifestyle and health data obtained from over 250,000 men and women who took part in 7 studies.

Researchers discovered that the risk of developing microscopic colitis was high in current and former smokers compared to never smokers. This study affirmed that cigarette smokers may be liable to come down with microscopic colitis.
