High-Intensity Cigarette Smoking Is Associated With Incident Diabetes Mellitus In Black Adults: The Jackson Heart Study

Heavy smoking of cigarettes may make black men and women highly susceptible to diabetes mellitus.

This study set out to provide answer to the question: are the odds of developing diabetes mellitus stacked against blacks who are cigarette smokers? Researchers evaluated the smoking habits and diabetes mellitus status of 2,991 black men and women.

Researchers found out that the likelihood of being diagnosed with diabetes mellitus increased by 79% among heavy smokers in this study. The results of this study indicate that intense smoking of cigarettes may result in the development of diabetes mellitus among black men and women.
