A multidisciplinary lifestyle program for rheumatoid arthritis: the "Plants for Joints" randomized controlled trial

Strict adherence to a whole-food plant-based diet, regular exercise, and adequate stress management may help reduce the rate of occurrence and severity of symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

This study looked at how a multifactorial lifestyle program influences disease activity and symptoms in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers randomly placed 83 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis into a control and an intervention group. While the participants in the control group received drugs only, their counterparts in the intervention group adhered to a lifestyle program centered on the consumption of whole food plant based diets, regular exercise, and stress management.

At the end of the 16-week study period, researchers discovered that members of the intervention group enjoyed a marked improvement in symptoms of the disease compared to their colleagues in the control group. The results of this study showed that healthy dietary and lifestyle habits may help reduce disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
