Ultra-processed foods and risk of all-cause mortality in renal transplant recipients

The odds of dying prematurely may be stacked against kidney transplant recipients on diets heavy on ultra-processed foods, such as desserts, processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

This study investigated how high dietary ingestion of ultra-processed foods influences mortality risk in kidney transplant recipients. Researchers followed 632 individuals who received a kidney from a donor via renal transplant surgery for 5.4 years, monitoring their food choices and death records.

Researchers found high number of deaths among participants who preferred consuming desserts, processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages. The findings of this study indicate that generous intake of ultra-processed foods may increase mortality risk among renal transplant recipients.
