How diet and lifestyle affect duodenal ulcers. Review of the evidence.

Habitual consumption of high-fiber diets may confer individuals with a lower risk of duodenal ulcer.

This study investigated whether dietary and lifestyle factors affect the odds of developing duodenal ulcer by meta-analysis. Researchers analyzed nutritional and clinical data obtained mainly from 3 case-control and 3 prospective cohort studies.

The team of experts discovered a significant protective association between high-fiber diets, particularly diets rich in soluble fiber from fruits and vegetables, and duodenal ulcer. According to this study, regular consumption of caffeine and diets high in fatty foods and proteins was found to have no significant effect on duodenal ulcer risk. The results of this study suggest that increased intake of foods loaded with fiber, especially soluble fiber from fruits and vegetables, may decrease an individual's susceptibility to duodenal ulcer.
