The food industry has become very successful at developing irresistible, highly-palatable foods that seduce our taste buds. Because today's food has had its components taken apart, scientifically re-formulated, and put back together (with the addition of salt, sugar and fat into a "food-like" product), the majority of Americans have unknowingly turned into food addicts. As...

Back in the 1970s, the popular Carol Burnett Show did a recurring sketch making fun of daytime soap operas. The name of the parody, "As the Stomach Turns," was itself a playful poke at a popular afternoon soap of the era. Who would have guessed that the title of the classic comedy sketch would very...

Soy has been a controversial topic, especially on the internet. Much of this inaccurate information "lacks responsible scientific integrity," and has been generated by the president of a popular foundation that promotes lard, organ meats, raw milk, and butter as being healthy, nutrient dense foods.
When it comes to the health and nutritional benefits of cruciferous vegetables, the science is clear. The wide array of nutrients found in these vegetables are beneficial in the prevention of various chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. Our taste preferences and emotional attachment to food begin during the very first years of childhood. As a result, our adult food choices are based on learned principles that we have been exposed to throughout our lives. Think of a heart healthy diet, and I bet the Mediterranean Diet comes to mind. Its popularity comes from the foods that were once typically eaten in countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
Looking back at the data collected from the 1950s-1960s, we see that the Mediterranean Diet was based largely on whole plant foods, with the emphasis on fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, whole grains and breads. Olive oil, fish and wine were an additional component to this diet. Highly processed foods and unhealthy hydrogenated and saturated fats such as butter and coconut oil were avoided as well as salt and sweets. Eggs, meat, and dairy were eaten in limited amounts. Exercise was also an important constituent of the Mediterranean diet. Americans looking for a "heart healthy" diet believe they are consuming the Mediterraniean diet by pouring olive oil on their food and adding a glass of wine to their meals.
