Relation of Vegetarian Dietary Patterns With Major Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

A significant drop in coronary heart disease (CHD) development and mortality risk is associated with the consumption of vegetarian diets.

This meta-analysis summarized evidence from different studies that focused on the effect of vegetarian diets on cardiovascular health. A total of 7 studies involving over 190,000 participants and 8,000 cases of cardiovascular disease and mortality were considered eligible for this meta-analysis.

Data analysis revealed that high compliance with vegetarian diets decreased coronary heart disease (CHD) occurrence and mortality risk in both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. The findings of this study emphasized the importance of vegetarian diets in protecting an individual against developing and dying from coronary heart disease.
