Vegan Diet Is Associated with a Lower Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients with Hyperuricemia

Patients with hyperuricemia on vegan diet may have a low tendency of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

High blood level of uric acid (hyperuricemia) is an established risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study determined whether an association exists between the ingestion of a vegan diet and the probability of a patient with hyperuricemia ending up with chronic kidney disease. With the aid of dietary questionnaires and hospital records, researchers collected and studied the dietary habits and incidence of chronic kidney disease among 3,618 patients with hyperuricemia.

Researchers noticed that participants on vegan diet experienced a 31% decrease in chronic kidney disease risk. This study concluded that "a vegan diet may be beneficial in reducing the occurrence of CKD in patients with hyperuricemia."
