Dietary Fiber and Risk of Colorectal Cancer in the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study

Following a high-fiber diet may confer individuals with significant protection against colorectal cancer.

This study was carried out to confirm the protective effect of high fiber diet against colorectal cancer. With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers evaluated the diets of 443 patients with colorectal cancer and 42,672 cancer-free Japanese men and women for a period of 7.6 years.

The research team noticed a significant reduction in colorectal cancer risk among high consumers of fiber-rich foods. "This prospective study supported potential protective effects of dietary fiber against colorectal cancer, mainly against colon cancer," the authors concluded.
