Intake of Fruits and Vegetables in Relation to 10-year Weight Gain Among Spanish Adults

Avid consumption of fruits and vegetables may help to keep excess pounds at bay.

​This study analyzed the association between frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables and the prevalence of weight gain among Spanish adults. Researchers followed 206 healthy volunteers aged 15-80 years for 10 years, monitoring their eating habits and weight during this period. 

Researchers discovered that habitual intake of fruits and vegetables aided the attainment and maintenance of a healthy weight. Participants who consumed more than 333 grams of vegetables per day slashed their risk of gaining 3.41 kg in 10 years by as much as 84%. The results of this study suggest that compliance with diets rich in fruits and vegetables can help curb significant weight gain and obesity.
