Fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of cataract: insights from the UK Biobank study

Sticking to a high fruit and vegetable diet may help hinder the development of cataracts.

This study investigated whether habitual intake of fruits and vegetables is beneficial for the prevention of cataracts. Using validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers collated and examined the diets of 72,160 men and women residing in the United Kingdom. Cataract incidence rates of the study population were obtained through self-report and hospital records.

Researchers found an appreciable decline in cataract risk among participants at the top of the fruit and vegetable consumption ladder. Adequate ingestion of fruits and vegetables may help guard against the development of cataracts.
