Unprocessed Red Meat and Processed Meat Consumption, Plasma Metabolome, and Risk of Ischemic Heart Disease: A Prospective Cohort Study of UK Biobank

Increased intake of red and processed meats may heighten the risk of ischemic heart disease in men and women.

​This study evaluated the impact of the consumption of red and processed meats on the burden of ischemic heart disease (IHD). The study population included more than 90,000 men and women residing in the United Kingdom. 

The team of researchers found a high proportion of ischemic heart disease among avid consumers of red and processed meats. This study pointed out that adherence to a diet rich in red and processed meats may lead to the development of ischemic heart disease.
