Ultra-processed food consumption and adult obesity risk: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis

Likeness for ultra-processed foods may lead to the acquisition of excess weight and obesity in adults.

​This study evaluated the influence ultra-processed food consumption has on the burden of obesity in adults. Researchers collated and performed a comprehensive analysis of data obtained from 12 studies. 

Data analysis revealed that ultra-processed food eaters tend to be overweight and obese compared to non-consumers of these foods. According to this study, a 7%, 6%, and 5% increase in the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity respectively was found among individuals who consumed an additional 10% of ultra-processed foods daily. The findings of this study emphasized the contribution of ultra-processed foods to the rising incidence of obesity globally.
