Soy product consumption and the risk of major depressive disorder in older adults: Evidence from a cohort study

Generous consumption of soy foods may brighten an individual's odds of preventing depression.

The purpose of this study was to assess if preference for soy foods is tied to lower incidence of depression. Researchers examined more than 6,000 Chinese men and women with regards to their eating habits and the presence of symptoms of depression over a 6-year period.

Researchers discovered that depressive symptoms occurred at a lower rate among heavy eaters of soy foods than in infrequent consumers of these plant foods. The results of this study indicate that high dietary ingestion of soy foods may provide individuals with a shield against depression.
