Maternal alcohol consumption and risk of postpartum depression: a meta-analysis of cohort studies

Frequent drinking of alcohol may lead to postpartum depression in pregnant women.

This study examined the incidence of postpartum depression in pregnant women with a history of alcohol use. Researchers studied data obtained from 50,377 individuals who participated in 12 studies.

Researchers found out that pregnant women who regularly drank alcohol were more likely to experience postpartum depression than their colleagues who refrained from consuming alcohol. The findings of this study show that alcohol usage may increase a pregnant woman's chances of suffering from postpartum depression.
