Dietary Polyphenols in the Aetiology of Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis-A Multicenter European Prospective Cohort Study (EPIC)

Following a diet that promotes the intake of polyphenol-rich plant foods may help curtail the development of Crohn's disease.

This study assessed if consistent consumption of polyphenols from food sources is tied to lower risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Researchers surveyed the diet and health of more than 400,000 European men and women over a 7-year period. During the course of the study, a total of 354 cases of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease was recorded in the study population.

Researchers identified a favorable association between high dietary ingestion of polyphenols, such as flavones and resveratrol, and reduced risk of Crohn's disease. This study affirmed that regular intake of polyphenol-rich plant foods may help thwart the development of Crohn's disease.
