Consumption of vegetables and fruit and the risk of inflammatory bowel disease: a meta-analysis.

High consumers of fruits and vegetables are less likely to develop inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

This study was carried out to determine the relationship between the consumption of fruits and vegetables and the odds of developing inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Researchers conducted a meticulous meta-analysis on data extracted from 14 case-control studies.

Researchers observed a significant protective association exist between regular intake of fruits and ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. According to this study, high dietary ingestion of vegetables decreased the risk of ulcerative colitis, but not Crohn’s disease. The results of this study support the hypothesis that consistent consumption of fruits and vegetables is beneficial in the prevention of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
