Sugar intake and risk of hypertension: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of cohort and cross-sectional studies

Generous intake of sugared beverages may give rise to hypertension in men and women.

​This study examined how preference for sugary beverages affects an individual's chances of becoming hypertensive. Researchers compiled lifestyle and health data obtained from 35 studies.

Researchers noted that elevated consumption of sugar and artificial-sweetened beverages correlated with increased risk of hypertension. This findings of this study suggested that likeness for sugary beverages may lead to the development of hypertension.
