Ultra-processed food consumption and metabolic disease risk: an umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies

High consumers of ultra-processed foods may be highly liable to suffer from metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes.

​This study determined if there is a link between fondness for ultra-processed foods and the development of metabolic disease, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), using a meta-analytic approach. A total of 19 scientific studies were considered relevant for this meta-analysis. 

Researchers noted that the probability of having a metabolic disease went up with elevated intake of ultra-processed foods. The results of this study revealed that likeness for ultra-processed foods may favor the development of metabolic diseases.
