Inverse Association of Vitamin C with Cataract in Older People in India.

Adequate intake of diets dominated by foods rich in vitamin C may help guard against the development of cataract in old people.

This study investigated the role of dietary vitamin C in the prevention of cataract in old people in India. Researchers tracked the diets, lifestyle, and cataract incidence rates of 5638 Indians above 60 years of age. The team of investigators observed that the likelihood of developing cataract is lower in individuals with high intake of foods rich in vitamin C than in persons who rarely consumed or completely avoided foods with high vitamin c content. The results of this study support the hypothesis that dietary antioxidants, such vitamin C, may protect individuals from developing age-related cataract.
