Low consumption of fruit and vegetables and risk of chronic disease: a review of the epidemiological evidence and temporal trends among Spanish graduates.

Low cardiovascular morbidity and mortality risk is associated with increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.

​This study examined the correlation between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of developing chronic diseases by meta-analysis. Researchers conducted a meticulous meta-analysis on data obtained from 18,457 subjects. They found a low incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality among subjects with high dietary intake of fruits and vegetables. However, no clear association was found between fruit and vegetable consumption and cancer and diabetes development and mortality risk in this study. The results of this study show that greater intake of fruits and vegetables may lower the likelihood of developing and dying from cardiovascular disease.
