Lycopene/tomato consumption and the risk of prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Men who regularly consume lycopene-rich foods, such as tomatoes, have lower incidence of prostate cancer.

This study evaluated the effect of high intake of tomatoes and dietary exposure to lycopene on prostate cancer risk. Researchers reviewed nutritional and clinical data extracted from 11 cohort and 6 case-control studies. They observed that men who regularly consumed diets high in tomatoes and lycopene-rich foods had slim chances of developing prostate cancer. The findings of this meta-analysis reveal that consistent consumption of tomatoes and other foods with high lycopene content may protect men from prostate cancer.
