Are strict vegetarians protected against prostate cancer?

Low prostate cancer risk is associated with Black and White males who are strict vegetarians.

This study investigated the effect of vegan diets on prostate cancer risk. Using validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers examined the diets of 26, 346 Black and White male subjects recruited from the Adventist Health Study-2 Cohort. The prostate cancer hazard ratio of each participant in this study was also assessed.

Researchers discovered that subjects who strictly adhered to vegan diets had low odds of developing prostate cancer. The prostate cancer-protecting effect of vegan diets was observed in both Black and White subjects. The findings of this study show that habitual consumption of vegan diets may confer significant protection against the development of prostate cancer.
