Plant-based dietary patterns and risk of esophageal cancer: A prospective cohort study spanning 17 years

Strict adherence to a plant-based diet may help to keep esophageal cancer at bay.

This study explored the relationship between the consumption of plant-based diets and an individual's propensity to develop esophageal cancer. With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers collated and examined data on the dietary choices of more than 15,000 Chinese men and women within the age bracket of 40-69 years over a 17-year period. All the participants were regularly screened for esophageal cancer during the period of the study.

Researchers observed that followers of plant-based diets were adequately protected against esophageal cancer. This study provides material evidence that plant-based diets may be a potent dietary tool for thwarting the occurrence of esophageal cancer.
