Alcohol use may fuel the development of colorectal cancer.
This study examined whether alcohol consumption is associated with the development of colorectal cancer. Researchers analyzed the alcohol drinking habits of 6,692 Japanese men and women diagnosed with colorectal cancer and another 27,178 participants without a history of cancer.
Data analysis revealed that alcohol consumers accounted for the majority of cases of colorectal cancer found in the study population. The data from this study suggest that alcohol drinking may be one of the factors responsible for the formation of cancerous cells and tumors in the colon and rectum.
