Weight Gain and Alcohol Drinking Associations with Breast Cancer Risk in Japanese Postmenopausal Women - Results from the Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) Study

Frequent drinking of alcohol may induce the development of breast cancer, especially in overweight and obese women.

This study examined the role alcohol consumption and body weight play in the development of breast cancer in women. Out of the 38,610 Japanese women who volunteered lifestyle and health information, 273 of them were diagnosed with breast cancer during the course of the study.

Researchers noted that breast cancer risk moved in the upward direction among alcohol consumers and overweight women. This study documented that larger intake of alcohol and piling up of extra pounds may trigger the formation and spread of cancerous cells and tumors in the female breast.
