β-Cryptoxanthin and the risk for lifestyle-related disease: findings from recent nutritional epidemiologic studies.

A diet high in β-cryptoxanthin may help ward off metabolic syndrome, liver dysfunction, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, low bone mass, and atherosclerosis.

This study investigated the association between dietary intake of β-cryptoxanthin and the risk of developing several lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Researchers analyzed data extracted from the Mikabbi Study conducted in Japan.

Researchers found out that the likelihood of having atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, liver dysfunction, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and low bone mineral density were low in frequent consumers of β-cryptoxanthin. The results of this study show that adequate consumption of β-cryptoxanthin-rich foods may improve an individual's chances of preventing several lifestyle-related diseases, including osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.
