Influence of cigarette smoking on osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH): a systematic review and meta-analysis

Active and former cigarette smokers may have a high rate of occurrence of osteonecrosis of the head of the femur.

​Are former and current cigarette smokers more likely to suffer from necrosis of the head of the femur than never smokers? This study was carried out to offer answer to the above question. Researchers utilized data and evidence extracted from 7 previously published studies. 

Researchers found out the risk of having osteonecrosis of the head of the femur went up by 80-150% in current and past smokers compared to non-smokers. The results of this study showed that cigarette smoking may put an individual on the path to developing osteonecrosis of the head of the femur.
