Smoking Cessation Reduces the Risk of Heart Failure: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Quitting of tobacco smoking may be an important part of a lifestyle approach to fend off heart failure.

This study aimed to assess if cessation of smoking is beneficial for the prevention of heart failure. Researchers surveyed over 770,000 current and former smokers. Up to 23,329 cases of heart failure were recorded in the study population after a follow-up period of 6.3 years.

Researchers discovered that current smokers had high odds of suffering from heart failure. On the other hand, an appreciable drop in heart failure risk was observed among former smokers in this study. The results of this study suggested that quitting of tobacco smoking may boost an individual's chances of enjoying a life free from heart failure.
