Relationship Between Frequent Recreational Cannabis (Marijuana and Hashish) Use and Periodontitis in Adults in the United States: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011 to 2012

Frequent intake of cannabis may predispose an individual to having severe periodontitis.

This study determined whether recreational use of cannabis (marijuana or hashish) is a risk factor for periodontitis. Researchers comprehensively assessed the marijuana usage of 1.938 US men and women who underwent regular dental examination.

Researchers found out that compared to non users, regular users of cannabis had high propensity to develop severe periodontitis. This study supports the hypothesis that recreation use of marijuana may bump up the odds of acquiring severe periodontitis in men and women.
